SAGA 28mm Gripping Beast Viking

After a bit of looking round my lad and I decided that we would have a go at SAGA for this summer holiday game....... I had a look at the rules and decided that Vikings and...... Would be the basis of our forces...so I now need to get the two armies painted up before we go away....

We are going to start with two four point armies and then reinforce them once we have grasped the game mechanics.....

So the Viking Army is a GB starter army

1 Warlord
1 unit of 4 Hearth Guard
1 unit of 4 Berserkers
2 units of 8 Warriors

Here are my Beserkers and the start of the Hearth Guard..... Have tried to do a wintery.. Snow starting to melt... Basing effect.....

Beserkers first.....

Waterloo in 28mm - 199 years on.....

The Anniversary is upon us and here is the great man himself....... Surveying the scene and planning his next move.......

'Take time to deliberate, but when the time for action has arrived, stop thinking and go in......'
              Napoleon Bonaparte

Sound a bit like his plans for Waterloo...... :-)

With a member of the Mamluke's of the Guard watching on...... Don't believe there were many of these guys at Waterloo, those who were present joined other Squadrons of the Guard Light cavalry inc, Chassuer a Cheval and the Guard Lancers(Polish Squadron)

28mm Warbases Celtic Cross

After yesterday's disastrous trip to Phalanx.....van broke down so no stock and no Andy....... I haven't been able to get the horses and next sets of cavalry so I will have to work out with Andy how I am going to get them.....

Anyway before I came away I picked up one or two bits and pieces and when I got home I decided to paint up this 28mm Celtic Cross that Martin and Diane from Warbases had brought down for me.... Don't think it's on their web site yet but if you drop them a line I am sure they will help you out.....great people and great products...

Update.... Diane tells me it is now listed on their website....

A little bit of researched quickly informed me that these crosses were often brightly painted so I thought I would give it a go......

It's a 7 piece kit .....I haven't done the other two pieces of the stepped base and I will definitely be getting a couple more to grace my SAGA games table

This cross will be used for the backdrop of the Viking figure display eventually.

28mm French Cuirassiers

So here we have the first eight Cuirassiers .......not as quick as I hoped due to work and family commitments but not too bad. I picked up the other four horses at Phalanx so will complete this unit in the next few days.

Also I made a mistake in the last blog by stating that the 2nd Cuirassier regt was at Quatre-Bra, I had got this from the Osprey book on Napoleons Cuirassiers and Carabineers but checking other sources shows it was the 8th and 11th Regts that were at Quatre-Bra and as the 11th was not issued Cuirasses during the 100days I painted them as the 8th regt - hence the yellow facings.....

28mm Britannia Miniatures French Napoleonic Currasiers

So the anniversary of the battle of Quatre-Bras is almost upon us so I thought I would do a blitz paint up of some of the Britannia Cuirassiers that I picked up from Andy at Sheffield. Unfortunately I discovered that I can't count either and I am four heavy horse short..... So I will pick them up along with some Lancers and Hussars at Phalanx at the weekend.

The figures are very much in the style of the Carabineers and do give the feeling of big men on big horses......I think I will paint them as the 2nd Regiment......

The 2nd Regt fought at both Quatre-Bras and Waterloo

So here are the pictures..... Not the best as I used the ipad...... Figures have been cleaned and under coated with Humbrol black enamal

28mm Britannia Miniatures - Carabiniers

Something else that has not seen light of day for a while......28mm Carabiniers.

These were a joy to paint and were completed in 5 days.......not too shabby.

28mm Britannia Vikings - WIP

"AD. 793. This year came dreadful fore-warnings over the land of the Northumbrians, terrifying the people most woefully: these were immense sheets of light rushing through the air, and whirlwinds, and fiery dragons flying across the firmament. These tremendous tokens were soon followed by a great famine: and not long after, on the sixth day before the ides of January in the same year, the harrowing inroads of heathen men made lamentable havoc in the church of God in Holy-island, by rapine and slaughter."

Entry for the year 793 in the Anglo Saxon chronicle.

The generally accepted date for the Viking raid on Lindisfarne is in fact 8 June, so I thought these were appropriate. There are another 7 figures to finish this week and then a scenic base to work on.....
